What's The Point?

We spend much of life chasing after things we believe will finally make us happy. Success, pleasure, knowledge, wealth, relationships, achievement, and even leaving a lasting legacy all promise to give our lives meaning. Yet sooner or later we discover that none of them can carry the weight of our deepest hopes. Everything changes, everything fades, and eventually death comes for us all.

The book of Ecclesiastes refuses to ignore that reality. The Teacher looks honestly at life “under the sun” and describes it as a vapor—brief, elusive, and impossible to control. He explores the frustration of work, the injustice of the world, the limitations of wisdom, the emptiness of wealth, and the certainty of death. Yet Ecclesiastes is not calling us to despair. Instead, it exposes the things we wrongly expect to satisfy us so that we can receive life itself as a gift from God.

As the book moves toward its conclusion, the question changes from “How can I make life meaningful?” to “How should I live the life God has given me?” Ecclesiastes calls us to enjoy God’s gifts, walk in wisdom, remember our Creator, and fear Him. Life under the sun cannot provide the permanence our hearts long for, but it points us beyond itself to the One who can. In Christ, our labor is not in vain, death does not have the final word, and the fleeting gifts of this life can be enjoyed without asking them to become our god.
