Still Moving

From the beginning, the message of Jesus has faced opposition. Governments have attempted to silence it, cultures have resisted it, religious traditions have complicated it, intellectuals have questioned it, and idols have competed with it. Yet throughout the book of Acts one truth becomes increasingly clear: the gospel cannot be chained.

Acts 12–20 follows the message of Jesus as it moves through prisons, cities, cultures, conflicts, and continents. Peter walks out of a locked prison while a powerful king discovers the limits of human authority. Paul and Barnabas carry the gospel across cultural boundaries. The early church defends salvation by grace alone against those who want to add religious requirements. Closed doors redirect missionaries, unlikely people become part of the church, hostile crowds cannot stop the preaching of Christ, and the gospel walks directly into the philosophical world of Athens and the idolatrous economy of Ephesus.

But Acts does not portray unstoppable people. Paul and his companions experience disagreement, persecution, exhaustion, fear, and uncertainty. What is unstoppable is the Word of God and the mission of the risen Christ. God works through weak people, unexpected circumstances, suffering, friendship, providence, and perseverance to make Jesus known.

By the time Paul says farewell to the Ephesian elders, the question is no longer whether opposition will come, but whether Christ’s people will faithfully continue the mission. The gospel calls us away from comfort, control, approval, and self-preservation and into courageous faithfulness. Kings rise and fall, cultures change, idols compete for our hearts, and believers grow weary—but Jesus is still building His church, and His gospel is still on the move.
