God Why?

Life is packed full of disappointment, tragedy, and unforeseen calamity. Even though we know unfortunate events will happen, we still wrestle with what we should do. The initial response when faced with calamity is to question God, particularly His just nature. “Why me, God?” Why did you allow or cause this to happen?” “If you are so good God, why do such bad things happen?”

If anyone had the right to ask these tough questions it was Job. Job was about as upright a person as there was, and yet lost everything. His wealth, his health, and his family disappeared! As we listen in on conversations between Satan, God, Job, his wife, and a lengthy conversation among him and his friends we struggle for answers as we demand answers, or at least justice, from God.

After the (lengthy and poetic) conversations wrap up, we hear from God himself. God does not give a full explanation but instead an invitation to trust Him further. The resolved response the book of Job gives humanity is not to merely question God, but to trust God and his just nature even when life doesn’t seem fair.
